Scores of Massachusetts politicians have been stepping forth in an attempt to fill the empty senate seat created by the death of Edward "Ted" Kennedy in August. A special election will be held between January 18 and February 2, 2010 to select a new senator for the first time since Senator John Kerry's induction in 1984. Five candidates are currently in the running for the open seat.

Scott Brown (R) has been a member of the Massachusetts State Senate since 2004 and represents the Norfolk, Bristol, and Middlesex Districts. From 1998 to 2004, he served three terms in the Massachusetts House of Representatives from the 9th Norfolk District. As a state senator, Brown has helped fight against tax raises and wasteful government spending.

Michael Capuano (D) is a Congressional representative of Massachusetts' 8th District, which includes Cambridge, Chelsea, Somerville, and parts of Boston. For eight years prior, he served as the Mayor of Somerville. Nancy Pelosi appointed him head of the Special Task Force on Ethics enforcement in January of 2007.

Martha Coakley (D) is presently the Attorney General of Massachusetts. Throughout the 30 years of her legal and political career she has served as the Middlesex District Attorney and strongly advocated for health and public safety, particularly for children.

Alan Khazei (D) is the founder and CEO of Be the Change, Inc., a program dedicated to the creation of a coalition of national nonprofit organizations and citizens in an effort to take legislative action on education and poverty. City Year, a youth service group that assists the development of AmeriCorps, is one of the institutes that grew from Be the Change, Inc. A self-proclaimed social entrepreneur, Khazei was named one of America's 25 Best Leaders by US News and World Report in 2006.

Stephen Pagliuca (D) is the managing director of private management firm Bain Capital. Additionally, he is a managing partner and executive committee member for the Boston Celtics. Pagliuca is chairman or trustee to a number of welfare organizations concerning children's health, safety, and rights to education.
