College fashion sense lacking?

Ever since I first came to BSC in the fall of 2005, I have noticed a trend in clothing style on campus…or lack thereof. It seems more often than not students find it perfectly acceptable to shuffle from class to class wearing pajamas.
I can't help but cringe when I pass a girl with her hair thrown up into a haphazard bun, an oversized t-shirt or hoodie, gigantic sweatpants, and dirty flip flops. Guys aren't much better when they slug past wearing an XXL t-shirt, gym shorts, Adidas sandals with socks and a serious case of bed head. Call me crazy, but I thought we were in college. This is supposed to be the time of our lives and we should all be dressing the part.
I'm not saying that I desire to see girls strutting down the sidewalk wearing a blazer, skirt and stiletto heels or guys in a chic three-piece suit and Italian leather shoes. I simply wish students would take pride in the way they look and wear something decent and presentable on a daily basis. Something as simple as pulling on a pair of jeans and a polo is a much better alternative to grungy sleepwear.
College is a huge landmark in our lives. It's a time when we're meeting new people, making connections, and networking for potential future jobs. What kind of message is a person who looks like they just rolled out of bed sending? It projects an image of disorganization, sloppiness, and the inability to take things seriously. Do you really want to approach a professor for extra help looking haggard and unkempt?
The next time you wake up after a long night of studying or partying, sleep deprived or hung over, think long and hard before leaving your room in pajamas. Take the time to shower, comb your hair, and put on a real outfit. You will not only feel more awake but more confident and ready to take on the day.
