Movie Review - Saw V
Hakim Hill
I'm looking for one word to describe this movie.
Being an avid movie watcher, I understand the power of a story line. Despite its main point in being a horror/gore movie, I actually enjoy learning and understanding the depth and intellect of each character that the "Saw" series introduces. It was always interesting seeing the twists that the plot takes while revealing what kind of a person a character really is.
"Saw V" does not do this. We do not discover anything new, but at the same time, we are introduced to new characters that bare no depth and add no fuel to drive this storyline. The movie picks up almost exactly where the last one ended adding a few tidbits as to when and how Hoffman (Costas Mandylor) becomes Jigsaw's protégé. This is the only back-story that is shown. Besides that, it is pretty much a cat and mouse game between Hoffman and Strahm.
The movie also leaves a little plot hole with Jigsaws ex-girlfriend. Jigsaw hands her down a box after he dies, but it is never shown what is inside of it. This was obviously a set up for the sixth and hopefully final Saw. The main problem with this movie is that it does exactly the same things that the other ones did, except the traps are less thrilling, the characters don't develop as much, and it just isn't as surprising. Watching this movie reminds you of why most writers and directors only make trilogies.
The word that I am looking for to describe this movie is: pointless.
