My major is better than your major

That's right, I said it. Because I am a biology major I'm so much smarter than any other person outside of the major. I'm better than education majors, English majors, and even math majors; oh and don't get me started on the art majors, they don't even register on the map compared to biology. Or at least that's what some people think. Honestly, just because I'm going to school for biology does not automatically make me smart. I don't think that it is fair to decide what a person is like based only upon what they are going to school for.
My sister is an art major with a photography concentration; she's a freshman here; while I am a junior and a biology major. While talking to people, either ones we have just met, or even family members we haven't seen in a while, they have the same reactions. They look at her in pity that she couldn't do anything better than photography while they pat me on the back for having a "real major." The way I see it, it shouldn't matter what your major is, you're still a person, and a person has many facets, not just what they're going to do for a living.
I get the same reaction when I reveal my major. "Oh you're so smart! I couldn't do that." And yet when my sister does, they say "You should do something like a real major, you're smarter than that."
Does it really matter how smart you are what major you can have? Is it like if your SAT score is so high you can only do such and such? No, we're not a communist state, we're America. This is the country where you follow your passion, not being put into a job that you don't want.
The next time you meet a new person and they tell you what their major is, don't jump to conclusions about them or what they are capable of. Just because they have a passion for something doesn't put them into a category. A person is not their job, so don't judge them by what they want their future job to be.
