Back to my roots: Fashion Faux Pas

Issue date: 5/1/08 Section: Arts & Entertainment
This past year had seen an evolution in the Style Files column. When I first started writing it, I did not know what to do with it. I was not sure if I should focus more on campus fashion or concentrate on what was going on in the fashion industry.
I chose to concentrate more on high fashion this year. That may not have been connected to the campus, but I received positive feedback from friends and some of my professors. So I continued with it. A part of me does miss the old days when I focused more on tips and the do's and don't's. Everyone loves a good fashion faux pas.
For the last issue of the year I would like to revisit some of the most notorious fashion faux pas.
One that many would have thought was long gone is still with us, but in secret. The fanny pack is still sneaking around, claiming victims left and right.
There is absolutely no reason anyone should be carrying a fanny pack. There is not enough junk in the world to warrant it. With all of the choices we have today, what would possess someone to choose a fanny pack? I cry for those poor souls who have given into the dark side.
Another unfortunate fashion faux pas are shorts that are too short! No one wants to see your butt cheeks hanging out of the bottom of your shorts. There is no need to walk around and actually think you look cute.
There is no excuse. There are plenty of places one could buy a pair of shorts that actually covers their butt. Even some hookers look down upon that. And I have seen plenty of girls on this campus who have decided to take this unfortunate look and embrace it. That is a no no.
One trend that I never really understood was wearing jeans with large gaping holes in them. What purpose did those holes serve? Why would anyone want to walk around with gigantic holes on their legs?
I feel sorry for those people who have spent their hard earned money on a pair of jeans that are falling apart more and more after every time they are worn.
