On Oct. 24, the Outreach Education, Health Wellness department along with Active Minds hosted a pumpkin painting event in the campus center to promote the spirit of Halloween at the Brockton Veterans hospital. The event proved to be great way to relieve all of that midterm stress while simultaneously relieving the life stressors of the patients at Brockton Veterans Hospital. The pumpkins, donated by Hanson's Farm, were part of a public service campaign to enhance the quality of life of hospitalized veterans at the Brockton VA hospital by decorating their rooms for this free-spirited holiday and to brighten the day for the clinic patients as well.
There was a great turnout from students and the college was able to finish up 50 pumpkins which were then brought to the VA on both the inpatient and outpatient floors. They hospital was thrilled to receive the gifts. Oftentimes, the Veterans Hospital relies on the college for aid, whether it is helping with the patients or decorating for special occasions, and the patients, staff and administrators appreciate all of the efforts and creativity that the students always manage to bring to the table.
The students seemed to enjoy the event as much as the patients enjoyed the result. The pumpkin painting became a social event with a public service objective and an academic achievement. The students were able to relax and get away from some of the stress of midterms while watching a movie and helping others.
Sheri Teague from Active Minds added "We are very pleased with the results of the program - not only did it provide an outlet for students to relax and take a break during a stressful week of midterm papers and exams, but it also reached out to our community and put a smile on the face of a survivor, a hero, a Vet!"
